This thesis was driven by my central question: how do women in nineteenth-century ghost stories represent New Orleans’ history and what does this engagement say about the city’s social anxieties now? I found that in New Orleans ghost lore, women historically represent social collapse, but are remembered as extreme exceptions. These “abnormal” women exist as gendered scapegoats on which the historical memory of New Orleans can safely put causality and blame. Given that they are representative of the city’s violent social dynamics, I also hypothesized that these ghostly women and their memories are representative of the city’s racial divides, wealth gaps, religious oppression, and violent actions.
